California Road Trip 2017
A 16,000 km Cross-Country Road Trip

We had a great road trip. We were on the road for 82 days. We visited 18 states and 5 provinces and we drove just under 16,000 kms. Our new car performed great and was the perfect care for the road trip. With the active cruise control and lane keeping technology it was so easy to drive. The cooled seats with the massage feature were great on those hot days. The warmest temperature we had was in Palm Springs at 30 degrees Celsius.  Overall we burned 1542 liters of gas with an average gas price of 94 cents per liter. The cheapest gas was in Oklahoma City at 52 cents per liter and the most expensive was in Northern Ontario at $1.32 per liter.

What Happened Here?

What Happened Here?

Our first stop after Florida was Memphis Tennessee. Here we visited the Elvis Presley career and automobile museum and then went across the street to visit Graceland. We spent all day Sunday touring the Graceland Mansion and the Elvis exhibits. We purchased the VIP pass which is highly recommended. We had personal guides and went to the front of the lines..

After Memphis we drove to Oklahoma City where we visited the Oklahoma Federal Building Bombing Museum and toured the memorial site for the Alfred P Murrah Building This is the building that was bombed in 1995 by Timothy McVey. A total of 168 people lost their lives in what was one of the first terrorist bombings. We then spent the afternoon in Oklahoma City visiting the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. It is a huge facility with acres of displays including a rodeo and heritage town. Great place to spend a chilly afternoon in Oklahoma City.

We then drove down Route 66 toward Flagstaff, Arizona and stopped off at the Route 66 Vintage Auto Museum along the way. At Flagstaff we joined an all day guided tour of the Grand Canon. The tour was awesome and the guides were really informative. The guides set up a 4 course lunch complete with china and silverware on a while tablecloth on two picnic tables in the middle of the park.

From the Grand Canon we drove to the Hoover Dam for another guided tour. The Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936. You can see the turbines inside the dam in the photo at the top right.

We drove to Las Vegas next where we stayed for a week. Here we visited Freemont street, took in a Celine Dion show which was awesome and visited the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop - home of the the Pawn Stars. We also took the time to stop off at Chapel of the Bells for a very important ceremony.
